Getting a blow, hit, or trauma to the head can possibly cause cataracts to form. This type of head injury can
result in a traumatic cataract as shown in the picture below.
Cataract surgery in cases of head trauma require extra skill from your cataract surgeon because of possible
associated injuries to the cornea, foreign bodies in the eye, or retinal problems.
A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens of the human eye and any kind of head trauma can indirectly cause
the lens of the eye to become cloudy as a traumatic cataract develops.
Options for treatment of a cataract due to head trauma are to observe for worsening of the cataract until the
point that vision is affected enough to justify doing cataract surgery with intraocular lens implantation.
